One of the most frequent questions I get asked when doing hair is, "Do I need to buy professional hair products or is it okay to use store bought"?
This is something that I believe is the MOST IMPORTANT thing to know about styling your own hair. Store bought hair products are a waste of money and they drain all the life out of your hair. In my opinion I would rather spend more money on getting nice, professional hair products then spending a lot of money getting my hair cut and colored. If you want success with making your hair look and feel great then you have to start out with the right tools.
Store bought shampoo and conditioner: These products are made to be sold to a large volume of people. They are made to work for just about anyone. My question is how can someone with straight, thin, hair have success using the same product as, say, someone with thick, curly, hair? Not only that but, store bought SHAMPOO is filled with way to much detergent making you feel good with it's rich lather. Detergent is not good for your hair, it is made up of laureth sulfate and laurel sulfate both of which have been proven to cause hair loss. These shampoos are way too strong and are not healthy to be using on a daily basis. They strip your hair of it's life as well as the 130 dollar color you just had done. CONDITIONER is filled with WAX making your hair appear to be silky smooth. This wax will coat your hair and weigh it down so that any body or life you might have had is now completely gone.
I have noticed over the 8 years I have been doing hair, that I can tell as I am rinsing someones hair if they are using store bought shampoo and conditioner. When people use these products there is a smell that comes off their hair the minute I get it wet. I can usually tell which brand they use. HINT:if your hairdresser can tell what brand of shampoo/conditioner you are using you should probably throw it away! You should never be able to smell the product more when you get your hair wet. That is a sign that there is thick residue on your hair still and it is not ever getting truly cleaned. Also, I can tell when I am cutting someones hair if they are using store bought conditioner because when I hold the hair in my fingers and slide them down to the end were I make my cut, my fingers get caught up and stick to the hair and it takes effort to get them to slide down through the hair smoothly. That is a sign of too much wax on the hair.
If this sounds like how your hair feels you should go buy a clarifying shampoo from your local beauty supply and wash your hair a couple of times with this. Then, THROW AWAY your cheap shampoo and conditioner and get yourself some healthy products!
Professional shampoo and conditioner: Have you ever been using a great product but you feel like it isn't lathering up like you are used too? That is a sign of a good product. The KEY is to use barely any shampoo (about the size of a quarter) then after massaging it into your hair ADD WATER to it and massage some more. When you do this it will lather up WAY more and not only that but you will be wasting way less of your expensive product. The reason professional shampoo doesn't lather as much is because it doesn't use as much detergent (laurel sulfate/ laureth sulfate) which is actually a GOOD thing. Detergent is not healthy for you and really shouldn't be used excessively. Another point I would like to make is Professional products are all made for different types of hair. You can find exactly what you need for your particular hair type.
I promise that if you try a quality product for at least a month, you will notice a HUGE difference in the life of your hair. You will SAVE MONEY by not having to get your hair colored as often because it wont fade as fast. Also, when you STYLE your hair it will do everything you want it to with much less effort on your part.
As far as styling tools go, they are sooooo important. Mouses, creams and spray's that go on your hair when wet PROTECT your hair from heat and they help give your hair what ever it needs such as, getting rid of frizz, giving your hair body, etc. finishing styling products such as, wax, gloss, pomade are vital in making your hair look AWESOME. These products are my favorite, I can take dull looking hair and with these products make the hair look healthy, shiny, and fierce! Have fun with it and don't be afraid to try something new!

Okay, I need to go and buy some pureology cause everyone has told me I need too:)!!!!
ReplyDeleteEven Pantene? I love my Pantene!
ReplyDeleteNichole, If you love Pantene and you don't feel like it weighs your hair down then I think you should use it. If your happy with how your hair feels then that's great! I will say though, it is good for your hair when you switch your shampoos every once in a while. And be aware of how much laurel and laureth sulfate is in your shampoo.
ReplyDeletecori, I love pureology! Just remember to only use a small amount and mix it with water so that it lathers up more for you. It's expensive but worth it if you are not over using your product, this way, it will last you a really long time!
ReplyDeleteGreat lessons... I could have used this last week... (it would have saved a bit of grief.)
