Zig Zag Twist

When I was in hair school I came up with this cute little style. Hopefully you can understand how to do it with the pictures. It isn't super easy to do hair and take pictures at the same time so my husband helped out a little.
This is what it looks like when its finished...


What you need...
bobby pins, a comb and hair spray

Start off by parting the hair into a zigzag right in the middle at the top of the head.



Take just the very tips of the points of each zig zag. There should be at least two maybe three on each side.

These are the tips on the left side...

These are the tips on the right side...

Then take a bobby pin and pin the right sides tips together and do the same with the left tips. The point for this is that we need them to be out of the way and we will use them in a minute.

Now you should have the tips out of the way. You need to go about an inch to and inch and to the right of the first zig zag and make another zig zag section.
After you do you will pick up that section you just created and twist it to the right and bobby pin it at the base to secure it.Now your going to do the same thing again to the right of the twist you just made but this time you are going to include the zig zag tips that you bobby pined away (the ones on the right). Those tips should just look like they are laying over that first twist that you made.

This is what it should look like on the right...

Now your going to do the same thing on the left side.

The only difference is when you twist the hair instead of twisting it to the right you twist them to the left.

Hopefully this isn't to hard to follow, let me know if you have any questions. To finish it off take your hair spray and give it a good spray holding it all in place.

Learn a New Technique

This last weekend I went to the Long Beach hair show, I learned a lot of fun, new things that I want to share one of the new techniques I learned for getting a really fun, kinky wave in your hair.
Things you will need: 2, rat tail carbon combs.
Flat Ironand one or two Butterfly clips

First and most important, DO NOT USE a regular comb for this method I'm about to show you. You must use a Carbon comb. Carbon combs do not melt and that is the reason you HAVE to make sure you don't use any other type of comb.

Ok first thing you want to do is pull up all the hair except for an inch of the bottom section. Use your butterfly clip to hold the rest of the hair out of the way.

Second thing you want to do is take a small section of the hair that was left out and comb it out so that it is smooth. And hold it it in your left hand. HINT- if you want bigger waves use more hair at once and for really small, tight, kinky, waves use really small sections at once.

Next, take your two rat tail combs and hold them in your right hand like this...

Take the small section in your left hand and wrap it around each comb like a figure eight. You want to make sure when you start the figure eights that your combs are fairly close to the scalp. Continue to wrap the hair around each comb like this until the hair is all entirely wrapped around the combs.

Then hold the combs and the hair tight in your left hand and with your right hand get your hot flat iron and place the combs with the wrapped hair inside the flat iron. Press down for about 5 seconds, long enough for the hair to heat entirely.

Now slide the combs out of the hair and your left with the hair looking like this...

Continue doing this over the entire head until every hair has been waved. Then I would use some gloss drops (paul Mitchell), or super skinny serum or some other product that will give definition and shine to the hair. Rub the product into your hands and then separate all of the waves with your fingers.

From here you can either leave it like it is for some really great wavy hair with a ton of body or you can play with it further and do a fun up do, put it in pig tails or just go crazy and make it bigger with some hairspray.:) These waves can be so fun! It reminds me of the crimping day's but better!

I did this the other day on my daughter and we decided to put it up into an up do. I will have to do another tutorial on how I did that next time. Ok now, go try it! First go buy some carbon combs, I would hate for someone to melt their combs onto their hair! YIKES!

HAIR CONSULT FOR SARAH

Sarah contacted me to get a hair consultation this week and I was excited to do it! Here is what I came up with for you Sarah. Hope it helps!:)

First I am going to talk about your color so don't pay attention to the hair cuts on these first few pictures.

When looking at Sarah's pictures I really actually love the deep richness in her hair color. I think it is a beautiful color that a lot of people try to achieve. The only thing is I feel like it might be a little bit too rich and dark allover which in turn washes her out just a little. I do think she needs to keep some of the warmth and richness in her hair but just needs to weave in a lighter color to break it up a little bit. What this will do is bring out the warmth in her skin tone and make her eyes pop even more!

I found three variations of what I was kind of thinking...

Color 1 and 2 are really similar.

This is if you want to have your hair still look really natural. To achieve this you would just need to have someone give you a really subtle, full or half head weave. I think this would look really beautiful on Sarah and really warm up her skin tone!

This 3rd color has a lot more warmth in it and is definitely something that would look gorgeous on Sarah but it is a more drastic color. This looks to me like a chunkier weave adding in some warm hi lights and also a touch of red or auburn.

This 4th picture is my favorite! I love it and think it would look so pretty Sarah! Using a chunkier weave and adding these lighter hi lights would look GORGEOUS!
Now on to the hair cut. Sarah has a square face shape so ultimately I would try to soften that jaw line with the hair style and the hair cut.

In these pictures don't pay attention to the hair color.

Hair cut and style 1 and 2:

I think Sarah's long hair is already so pretty. If she is wanting to keep it long I would have someone add some heavy layers. This will add so much softness to Sarah's face and jaw line. Making sure though, that the layers don't begin right at the jaw line. I would definitely start them at right around the cheek bone. Also, this is style with the sexy loose curls would be ideal for Sarah! Parting it down the middle or just off the middle is great for square face shapes!

This is the same look as the first but just a little shorter hair which would also be really cute!
Hair cut and style 2:

This longer, A line bob is also really cute. I think this would give Sarah's face the appearance of being oval.

If shorter is something she wants to try I think this cut would be really cute on her!
Hair cut and style 4:

This is pretty much the same as hair cut 3 with just a heavy bang. Sarah could definitely pull off this look! Just keep in mind to stay away from forward square bangs and stick to the side swept soft bangs!

These two lengths would be great on Sarah because the hair is cut just longer then the jaw line. Giving it a soft look!

Hair style and cut 5:

For the longer straighter hair I would definitely add some soft shorter layers. Staying away from long straight boxy hair styles. The roundness in these layer really rounds out the face!

Sarah, good luck with picking a favorite and please send me some pictures of your new look! :) Also, don't be afraid of change it will look beautiful no matter what you do!!

FRAME BOW HOLDER

This is a really quick and easy way to make a frame bow holder for those of you with little girls. All you need is a frame, glue gun and ribbon.

EXAMPLE

I did a little hair makeover consultation for my sister in law, Angie. I wanted to post it so those who are interested could get an idea of what the makeover consultation is.

These are the two pictures that Angie sent me, one of her face shape and one of what her hair all done the way it looks right now.

Angie's face shape is very similar to mine, it is closest to an oval. However her jawline does look a little bit square. This is what I call a squoval (it should be a word=)).

Ang, you are one of the lucky ones who can really get away with almost any style you want. Your skin tone is also a little darker which can also be really great because you can get away with coloring your hair all different ways. Here are a few styles and colors that I think would look really great on you.


First I want to start with your haircut, so don't pay attention to the color of the hair in these pictures. I chose 4 different lengths to give you a few options.

Hairstyle 1
I have always loved your long curly hair and think this natural look fits your style and personality. I'm not sure how curly your hair is anymore but even if it isn't super super curly I think the long bed head look is really natural looking and pretty. You are so beautiful that you could pull it off especially if you have a killer hair color!

Hairstyle 2

I am in love with this hair cut and think it would look awesome on you. I think you would look great with a side swept bang! This hairstyle could be achieved by using a razor and really taking out a lot of the bulk of your hair. Leaving the lenth in your hair and really layering and texturizing it would give it this great look!

Hairstyle 3
This style would really work for your face shape and would even soften your jawline a little bit. Love it and wish I could cut it like this for you!

Hairstyle 4

There are not many people in my opinion who can pull off this short of a style. You have such a beautiful face and with its oval shape you could pull this off for sure! I think if you ever wanted to try something new this cute, short, sexy style would look stunning on you! You could also play around with the color even more and make it more dramatic.

Now for the color my favorite part! I think your hair color looks great right now but if I were going to color it myself I would probably add a little dimension in it by using some dark chocolate brown lowlights and some carmel or toffee color highlights.
I think with your dark eyebrows the dark chocolate browns will really look the best on you but you can really have fun with color using some of the carmel colors or even a little hint of red. Here are some pictures I found that explain what I mean.


Color 1
I think the dark chocolate tones with a few carmel highlights would look so beautiful on you. The dark brown would really bring your eyes and the highlights would break up the color making it look bright and beautiful!

Color 2

If a more natural look is something you want I would go a really dark brown like the picture below. If you make sure the brown is rich and dark enough then you don't need any highlights and the upkeep wouldn't be as hard, just a little root retouch every few weeks.

Color 3

My husband tells me reds have more fun. I am loving the hint of red in your hair right now so why not give it a little punch. I think going more of a deep chestnut red would look awesome on you!

So my dear sister I hope I have helped and not just confused more. You are gorgeous no matter what you do with your hair! I miss coloring it myslef I alway's had so much fun and I love that you are not afraid of change! I'm excited to see what you decide to take on. BALLET UPDO

With all the dance recitals that should be coming up soon I thought I would give a little instruction on how to do a little ballerinas hair.

(please forgive the blurry pictures, I have an energetic little girl)

The tools you will need are- tiny elastic bands (the thicker the hair the thicker the elastic band you should use or if its really thick hair just use two or three elastics together for a stronger hold), comb, bobby pins (use the same color as the hair), one or two types of hair product such as, gel, mouse, hairspray, wax etc. I used this curl force by Redken, it wets down the hair, adds texture and has great hold, everything I need it to do in one bottle!
First comb or brush out the hair.
then you want to part the hair on either side or if you don't want it parted just pull it all straight back. spray or massage in your hair product (you might need to add water to get everything smooth.

part the hair from one ear to the other ear.
then using your comb smooth and tighten the hair back into a half ponytail like this. You can place it higher or lower depending on your preference.
Then add your product and maybe some water to the bottom section of hair and comb it up into another ponytail as close as you can to the first ponytail.
now what you want to do is take one section of the top ponytail, smooth it out and wrap it around your thumb. make sure your section of hair isn't to large or the bobby pin wont hold it very well.
Direct a bobby pin in at the base of the curl to secure it. Make sure the bobby pin is as tight against the head as you can.
Notice how there is still hair sticking out because the hair is so long, don't worry we will fix that later. Do the same thing all around the first pony tail until it looks like this...
There should be four or five barrel curls fastened with a bobby pin with the ends poking out.
Now do the same thing to the bottom pony tail. In this picture I am holding up the hair just to show how big I have my sections.

if you look close you can see how I am pushing the bobby pin in, make sure its flat with the head.

so now you just need to decide if you want the little hairs sticking out or if you want a polished look then you will have to use a few more bobby pins and tuck them under. In this case I tucked them under and made a few more barrel curls with the left over hair pieces.If you don't want it this fancy or big you can also just do one ponytail instead of the two. If you do that just smooth all the hair back into one elastic band.
